Introduction

MapXY is an ebook currently being written by a software developer with over twenty years programming experience. To be completed in early 2011, the tutorial will take you step by step through the whole process of developing a find nearest search engine, coupled with a Google Mapping interface. The material will come with a sample data file of all the hospitals in the UK, and will take you through Geocoding and plotting the hospitals onto a Map. Although the samples will be UK centric, the concepts will be applicable to all countries.

• Develop a PHP command line script to Geocode your existing database of locations by using the Google Mapping API v3.

• Learn to use a different custom map icon for each result.
• Customise the content that is displayed in the pop-up information window.
